COMPILATION OF THE COUNTRY PROFILE IN THE LIVESTOCK SECTOR

Dr. Emily Mogajane informed the DALRRD-NAHF Liaison committee on the 19th of August that she will be driving a project with the FAO to compile the National Investment Plans. In this process, the FAO has decided to have country profiles prepared which will assist in policy development.

The Livestock Profile Includes:

  • Gathering data on the current status of the livestock sector in the country with challenges and opportunities it has.
  • Analyse collected data and prepare the draft country livestock profile.
  • Share the cleared draft country livestock profile with the national authorities and stakeholders.
    • Livestock: fast-growing component of the agricultural economy
    • Drivers: population growth, urbanization, a shift in consumer preference,
    • A large contribution to agricultural GDP
    • Livestock role in emergency mitigation and contribution to crop production = pillar for food security, nutrition, and poverty alleviation
    • Despite the important role-public expenditure is low or declining
    • Maputo declaration=increase agricultural growth by 6% and raise budgetary allocation to 10% of GDP.

Background:

  • FAO and UN are working on specific agreements with national governments to guide the development
  • Hence, mainstreaming livestock development in NAIP (National Agricultural Investment Plans) and other documents is proposed

What is expected?

  • Information on the potential and challenges of the livestock sub-sector collected, collated, and analyzed
  • Priority areas of public and private investment in the livestock sub-sector identified
  • Compiled information is validated by stakeholders
  • Information made available for decision-making (policy briefs)
  • Compiled information included in key national planning documents (NAIP’s, CPF, CCA, etc)

Terms of Reference:

  • Gather information on the status, potential, opportunities, and challenges of the livestock sector
  • Analyze collected information, identify priority areas of investment, and produce draft Livestock Sector Profile (Outline)
  • Organize validation workshop to gather inputs, comments, and suggestions from key stakeholders
  • Incorporate feedback from the validation workshop
  • The FAO team will produce Policy Briefs and include them in the Key National Document

We look forward to assisting Dr Mogajane where possible.
