PROPOSAL FOR LWCC STATEMENT | WHY LIVESTOCK WELFARE IS IMPORTANT TO LIVESTOCK INDUSTRIES | Prof Gareth Bath
WHY LIVESTOCK WELFARE IS IMPORTANT TO LIVESTOCK INDUSTRIES
Economics recommends it
Animal productivity and farm profitability are linked to optimal levels of production. Feeding, breeding, management, and care benefit not only the animals but also the farmer.
Customers expect it
Consumers of livestock products expect that those products are derived from animals that are well cared for throughout their lives.
Industry requires it
Ensuring acceptably derived products is required by industry-specific Codes of Best Practice that include provisions for protecting and promoting livestock welfare.
Documents determine it
There are many Statements, Guidelines, Codes, Standards, Regulations, and Laws that determine what is acceptable, recommended, and unacceptable as applied to specific livestock categories.
Morality and humanity demand it
It is widely accepted that livestock are sentient beings that deserve respect and persons involved in the industry have a duty of care towards those animals.
All major religions command it
Every major religion worldwide contains instructions to their followers on the necessity of proper treatment of all animals in their care.
